Dhaulagiri Icefall

We reached the icefall in a nine hour round trip from Larjung. It was frightening to hear huge blocks of ice break off every fifteen minutes or so. In between, rock falls and avalanches filled the silence. We met a couple of Russians here too – Alexandr and Nikolai. In 1969, seven US mountaineers were killed in an avalanche in the icefall.

We passed this lake on our return trip. It hosts a yak blood drinking ceremony every April.
